BOUNDARIES ARE THERE TO BE OVERCOME.
Driving dynamics and efficiency, combined in the BMW M6 Convertible.
In the BMW M6 Convertible, the full-bodied rumble of the M TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder, cutting-edge assistance systems and a suspension with motor racing DNA go together to blur the boundaries between roads and race tracks. At least until the softtop is opened and rays of sunshine fall on the luxurious interior. Then it's the boundaries between an automobile and a high-power speed boat that begin to blur.

7-SPEED M DOUBLE-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION WITH DRIVELOGIC.
The M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic is an innovative double-clutch transmission specially designed for the BMW M high-revving engines. It comes with traction-optimised automatic gear selection, Launch Control, Low Speed Assistance, as well as the Automatic Start/Stop function. It can be controlled either automatically or manually using the gearshift paddles on the M leather steering wheel or the gear selector in the centre console.
The M double-clutch transmission makes it possible to change gears extremely quickly without an interruption in tractive force. This is due to two subtransmissions, each with its own clutch, which continuously relay the power of the engine to the wheels by overlapping the clutches. The gear shift strategy is also optimised with the help of existing navigation data – the M double-clutch transmission, for example, downshifts proactively ahead of bends. The additional Launch Control function, which allows maximum acceleration from a standing start, offers an extremely dynamic driving experience: shifting gears at high speed is possible without using the clutch, and without any interruption in the power delivery.
Regardless of whether the driver selects the automatic ("D" mode) or manual ("S" mode) mode, Drivelogic always offers three shifting options: extremely sporty, comfortable and efficient.
COMPETITION PACKAGE.
An unadulterated racing feel: the Competition package delivers enhanced engine output, more direct steering and a specially tuned suspension to ensure the BMW M6 Convertible brings an even higher level of performance to the road.
The output of the M TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder petrol engine jumps from 412 kW to 441 kW. This enhanced performance is achieved by raising the boost pressure in the upper range of revs. The sports exhaust system generates a particularly dynamic engine sound that is destined to thrill. On the racetrack and in everyday use, the specially tuned suspension and extremely dynamic direct steering ensure that every steering command is executed with maximum precision. The exclusive 20" M light alloy wheels Double-spoke style 601 M in Bicolour look with mixed tyres are extremely impressive, along with the Black Chrome-plated twin tailpipes of the sports exhaust system.
ACTIVE M DIFFERENTIAL.
The Active M Differential variably distributes the drive torque between the two rear wheels to optimise traction and driving stability during dynamic lane changing or accelerating out of curves, when making curves at high speeds or on roads with uneven surfaces, including on snow, gravel and ice. It even provides precise handling during extreme lateral acceleration. The constant, smooth adjustment of the differential lock harmonises the vehicle's driving performance, improving control in extreme driving situations.
Traction is optimised with the help of an electronically operated device that reduces the difference in revolution speed between the rear wheels. The system, which was developed for motor sports, is connected to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) via an electronic control unit. It proactively provides the perfect use of locking action between 0 and 100 percent, neutralising even the finest differences in torque between the rear wheels – without the tendency to understeer. The Active M Differential provides optimal grip as well as great directional stability and perfect handling, and it converts virtually all of the engine's drive power into acceleration.
M CARBON CERAMIC BRAKE.
The M Carbon ceramic brake is a result of the transfer of technologies from the motor sport industry. The application of an innovative carbon fibre compound ceramic makes the braking power even more direct and improves brake-fade stabilisation. It is also non-corrosive, very resistant to abrasion, tolerates more heat and contributes to a lower vehicle weight. Its lightweight construction reduces rotating and unsprung mass, improving acceleration, responsiveness and overall handling, but also increasing the driving dynamics and traction, improving suspension comfort and reducing fuel consumption.
With its unusually large brake discs (front 410 mm, rear 396 mm), six-piston fixed callipers at the front and one-piston floating callipers at the rear, the M Carbon ceramic brake boasts very high heat resistance even over long periods of use – which means it is also fit for the race track. The perforated, ventilated brake disc rings guarantee significantly enhanced responsiveness in wet conditions, as well as more intensive heat dissipation. The M Carbon ceramic brake is easy to recognise, thanks to its matt Gold-coloured brake callipers featuring the classic M logo.
M Carbon Ceramic Brakes
Dependent on conditions and usage, features specific to the materials used can lead to operational noises particularly in wet conditions just before the vehicle comes to a halt. The impact of moisture and road salt can cause the braking action to be equivalent to a conventional brake system. This can for a short time be experienced as a reduction in braking action and can be balanced out by greater pressure on the pedal where necessary.
RACING CHARACTERISTICS.
There's always a faster car. And here it is. The BMW M6 Convertible encapsulates the BMW M GmbH philosophy. After all, power is one thing − transforming it into an incomparable driving sensation is quite another. High-tech materials such as aluminium, ceramics and carbon are combined with expertise and racing DNA. Engineers become enthusiasts when they pursue the goal of creating the most exciting experience possible involving petrol and asphalt under an open sky.
Launch Control
Launch Control lets an engine that has reached operating temperature achieve maximum acceleration from a standing start. Just deactivate Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), choose the sequential mode with driving programme 3, firmly hold down the brake and press the accelerator pedal to kickdown. After the starting-flag symbol in the instrument cluster display is illuminated, the engine will be set to its ideal starting speed when pushing down the accelerator pedal. While maintaining kickdown, release the brake and the vehicle will then accelerate to the maximum until the accelerator is released. The M double-clutch transmission constantly sets the gearshift points so that when shifting up, the next optimal engine speed is available. This is a feature which is destined to delight drivers with dynamic, sporty ambitions.
Electronic Damper Control
Electronic Damper Control (EDC) automatically or manually adjusts damping force to suit the situation on the road. All vehicle movements impacting on driving response are monitored by sensors. Electronic Damper Control analyses this data and passes it on to the shock absorbers. These uses magnetic valves to adapt damping force at continuously variable levels to changing road, load and driving conditions. As a result there is a tangible reduction in diving movements when braking or body movements caused by bumps, cornering or acceleration, for example. The result is increased driving safety − due to the shortened braking distance, for instance − and improved ride comfort.
Dynamic Stability Control
Other highlights of the overall BMW M6 Convertible concept include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Optimised control functions now ensure further improved driving dynamics as compared to predecessor systems. What is more, additional functions are implemented for active safety (brake readiness, dry braking, fading support) and comfort (drive-off assistant, parking brake with Automatic Hold).
Dynamic Stability Control gives the driver a choice of three modes: DSC on, MDM (M Dynamic Mode), DSC off. While DSC on specifically counteracts oversteering and understeering by means of brake intervention, MDM allows for more wheel slip, thereby enabling ambitious drivers to perform light drifts. In this mode, too, support features intervene if a defined limit is surpassed. With deactivated DSC (DSC off), the driver can fully explore the threshold range on the race track and use the accelerator to make the car drift.M Servotronic
Drivers can enjoy optimum power steering support in every driving situation with M Servotronic. It dynamically adjusts the steering assistance to suit the current speed and delivers a direct and precise steering response even at high speeds. It also ensures supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, manoeuvring or navigating narrow or twisting roads.
A control unit uses electronic speed measurements to determine the necessary power steering support for every driving situation. The steering force of the hydraulic power steering is optimally and precisely adjusted to suit the driving situation.
This means that less physical effort is necessary for steering at lower speeds. As speed increases, however, the steering support is reduced continuously to ensure more direct contact with the road and therefore optimum directional stability. The M Servotronic is specifically calibrated to M vehicles, and at the push of a button, it offers the choice of three different sets of characteristics. In combination with the Competition package, M Servotronic boasts even more direct responsiveness.
M DRIVE.
M Drive allows for the individual configuration of personal driver profiles from comfortable gliding all the way up to a sporty and highly responsive set-up for use on the racetrack. Activating either of the two saved profiles (and all of the settings saved with them) is as simple as touching one of the M buttons integrated into the multifunction steering wheel at any time. The pre-set configurations can be adjusted individually via the iDrive menu.
The M driving dynamics buttons, for adjusting all of the individually configurable drive train and suspension functions, are arranged on the centre console around the gear lever. The driver can individually select the DSC mode or adjust the engine's performance characteristics, the Dynamic Damper Control parameters, the M Servotronic steering characteristics, the shift options for the M double-clutch transmission and the appearance of a Head-Up Display. In this way, a detailed vehicle set-up can be assembled – and saved by pressing and holding down one of the two M Drive buttons on the multifunction steering wheel.
BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS TECHNOLOGIES.
Whether the goal is maximum performance or minimum fuel consumption – for BMW, the focus is always on delivering quintessential BMW driving pleasure. BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimise fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a comprehensive technology package that includes the drive train, energy management and the vehicle concept based on intelligent lightweight construction – and is standard in every BMW.
Automatic Start/Stop function
The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is actually moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is idling and the driver's foot is off the clutch (manual transmission), or when the car brakes to a complete standstill (M DCT Drivelogic).
A signal in the Info Display indicates that the Automatic Start/Stop function is active. As soon as the driver takes their foot off the brake, the engine automatically starts up again immediately.
This function never compromises driving comfort or safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its optimal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated or cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned. If necessary, a central control unit restarts the engine even when at a standstill, for example if the car begins to roll or if condensation starts to form on the windscreen. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.Brake Energy Regeneration
Every time the driver brakes, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. This intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result: reduced fuel consumption and increased propulsion power – classic attributes of BMW EfficientDynamics.
